The Indonesia Sustainable Tourism Council (ISTC) is a collaborative platform that brings together government, industry, academia, and communities to promote sustainable tourism in Indonesia. Established to align tourism growth with sustainability principles—such as environmental protection, cultural preservation, and inclusive development—ISTC supports tourism that benefits both people and the planet.
Beyond its role in tourism certification, ISTC leads national efforts through six key programs that cover destination management, observatories, responsible marketing, and industry development. By offering policy guidance, expert knowledge, and cross-sector coordination, ISTC helps embed sustainability into tourism planning, implementation, and evaluation—ensuring a more ethical, competitive, and resilient tourism sector for the future.
ISTC Roles and Functions
POLICY GUIDANCE
ISTC provides strategic direction in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating sustainable tourism programs— including tourism certification— to enhance environmental sustainability and national tourism competitiveness.
ADVOCACY & EXPERTISE
We bring together a network of experts and use digital dashboards and data systems to support knowledge-sharing, strengthen policy decisions, and advocate for sustainable tourism practices across sectors.
ETHICAL AND RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
ISTC promotes the application of the Tourism Code of Ethics, encouraging responsible tourism practices and high-quality standards across destinations, businesses, and marketing efforts.
CROSS-SECTOR COORDINATION
We act as a bridge between government agencies, private sector, and communities—aligning sustainable tourism initiatives with broader goals like climate action and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We work closely with partners such as BAPPENAS, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Marine and Fisheries, Public Works and Housing, and others.
PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION AND QUALITY CONTROL
ISTC supports a wide range of initiatives—from planning and investment to green innovation and local empowerment. We promote best practices, recognize tourism champions, and ensure quality through certification and continuous monitoring.
EVALUATION AND SOLUTIONS
We assess challenges, provide strategic recommendations, and develop practical solutions to improve the implementation of sustainable tourism at local and national levels.
